MT4 Uses Magic Numbers to Identify Automated Trades

Automated strategies can share one trading account while following completely different rules. One expert advisor may trade short-term breakouts, another may manage a slower trend system, and manual positions may remain open beside both. Without a reliable identifier, software could struggle to determine which orders belong to which strategy.

In mt4 trading, magic numbers provide that identifier. An Expert Advisor can assign an integer to an order when it is created, then later use that value to locate, modify, or close positions associated with its own logic. The number does not predict market behavior or change execution. Its purpose is organizational, but poor organization can produce very real trading errors.

Magic Numbers Separate One Strategy’s Orders From Another

An Expert Advisor can attach a chosen magic number when sending an order. Later, the program can scan open or historical orders and compare their stored magic numbers with the value it expects.

Assume one strategy uses 4101 for momentum trades while another uses 7250 for range trades. Both can operate on the same account and even trade the same currency pair. The symbol alone would not distinguish ownership, but the assigned numbers allow each program to identify the positions intended for its own management rules.

That separation becomes particularly valuable when several automated systems run simultaneously.

Order Management Depends on Filtering Correctly

Identification matters because automated software does more than open positions. It may move stops, take partial profits, close trades after a time limit, or count existing positions before allowing another entry.

A poorly written routine that searches only by symbol could find an order opened by a different strategy. If it then modifies the stop or closes that order, one algorithm has effectively interfered with another.

Magic numbers reduce this risk only when the code actually checks them. Assigning a unique value has little benefit if subsequent management functions ignore the identifier.

One Number Can Cover Several Trades From the Same System

A magic number does not have to be unique for every individual order. It is commonly used to identify a strategy, strategy instance, or another logical group of trades. Individual tickets still distinguish separate orders.

Picture an automated system trading AUD/NZD during a range-bound session. It opens three positions at different prices, and all three carry magic number 3605. Later, its exit routine scans the account for AUD/NZD orders carrying 3605 and closes only those matching its criteria. Another automated system has an AUD/NZD position marked 8820, so that position is left untouched.

Using one identifier for a related group can therefore make management simpler than assigning a different magic number to every entry.

Manual Orders Need Deliberate Treatment

Manual trades are not automatically part of an Expert Advisor’s internal classification system. In many MT4 workflows, manually placed orders carry a magic number of zero, which gives automated code a useful way to distinguish them from positions opened with a nonzero identifier.

For mt4 trading setups that combine manual and automated decisions, this distinction needs to be reflected in the program’s filters. An Expert Advisor designed to manage only its own entries should generally avoid acting on zero-coded orders unless that behavior is intentional.

A broader filter is not necessarily more capable. Software that can see every account position may actually be less reliable if it cannot tell which positions it has authority to manage.

Reusing Identifiers Can Create Hidden Conflicts

Problems can emerge when separate Expert Advisors accidentally use the same magic number. If both also trade the same symbol, their orders may become indistinguishable to management routines that filter only by symbol and identifier.

Duplicating an Expert Advisor across charts can create a similar issue when each instance needs independent control. Timeframe, symbol, strategy version, or parameter set may require separate identifiers depending on how the program is written.

Before running automated strategies on the same account, document the magic number assigned to every Expert Advisor and decide what each number represents. Check whether separate chart instances should share an identifier or receive different ones, confirm how manual orders are treated, and test that stop changes and closing routines filter both symbol and magic number as intended. The useful test is not whether an automated entry opens correctly, but whether the program can later identify exactly which orders it is supposed to manage.
